Canal Street Market

The Canal Street Market site is centered around former Xinmin Market near Shantang Street in northwestern Gusu District of Suzhou. As meat, fish, and produce could be easily transported in through the canal nearby, this area used to be a very popular local wet market before it was relocated to a nearby site by local government in 2016.

The everyday life in Suzhou is always elevated as the local culture is never separated from food and dining traditions. In this project we are visioning a hub connecting different urban life scripts, for both locals and visitors, could be powered up by a “market”. The future program uses include a market, a boutique hotel, restaurants, retail, and outdoor pop-ups. Immersive theatre techniques are borrowed here to make the planning. The place will be divided into several highly contrasted parts, or scenes. Free exploration through the scenes defines individualized understanding of the scripts.
